About Us

S.H.I.N.E values progression towards an inclusive experience where students can explore diversity in media to expand their career interests and formulate craftsmanship at the Cathy Hughes School of Communications. Our platform is determined to cultivate an environment for the individual to forge representation by letting their story shine in the School of Communications. S.H.I.N.E.’s pillars formerly known as transparency, integration, and collaboration (T.I.C).

Introducing the new platform S.H.I.N.E Brighter below:

  • 2023-2024 Pillars: Balance, Efficiency, Advocacy, Management (BEAM)

    • Balance - We aim to focus on creating a balance between major specific opportunities and spaces for MJFC and SLMC majors to collaborate, explore, learn, and grow outside of their respective fields of study. Ensuring equal space and opportunity for SOC and Howard students to not only thrive in their own lanes but explore new ones. In addition, we value building our relationship with the College of Fine Arts to share creative success throughout college and beyond by giving access to talent for future projects.

    • Efficiency - We inspire students to strive for excellence in all areas to utilize their time at Howard efficiently by gaining professional development skills, building strong connections with career professionals and securing internship opportunities that they can employ in their future careers. We are building a community for students and professionals to cultivate a networking collective.

    • Advocacy - We are building a strong foundation to advocate for underrepresented students and groups on Howard University’s campus. Remaining committed to the advancement and scholarship of SOC students and other Bison who may otherwise find it difficult to find spaces within their school where they can display their professional and/or academic abilities and also stay true to themselves.

    • Management - We believe in securing sponsorships and external sources through coordination with the School of Communications administration. Students will gain better knowledge of how to locate resources to further their education.

To date, CHSOC S.H.I.N.E Brighter Council administration has executed over sixty-seven successful events and initiatives. Our programs promote unity, activate young voices, and enhance students’ college experience with self-development, resume building, fundraising, service projects, cinematic arts, fine arts, scholarship and mentorship.

Our Mission

President Alana

“My favorite pillar is Management because I believe students should have access to all resources to enrich their college journey and connect with the SOC community. I want to establish new programs, secure external sponsorships and partnerships, and foster a culture of career advancement for SOC students. I’m excited to make CHSOC S.H.I.N.E Brighter than ever!”

Vice President De’Anya

“I am excited to continue my work as Director  of Mentorship through my favorite pillar, Efficiency! This is my favorite pillar because I am all about working diligently to maximize our time here at Howard so that we may acquire the greatest results.”

Secretary Aaliyah

“My favorite pillar is Advocacy because I am passionate about uplifting the voices of the underrepresented. One of my main goals for SOC is to push for more open communication between faculty, professors, and students.”

Treasurer Brianna

“My favorite pillar is Balance. One thing I envision is a more unified and community-oriented SOC, with MJFC and SLMC majors networking and establishing relationships regularly. A change that I will spearhead, in the process of creating this unification, is bringing more finance and rhetorical applicable workshops to SOC, ranging from investing to public speaking.”
